Session Initiation Protocol, or SIP, is an Internet Protocol used to initiate or terminate live communication sessions. These may include anything from instant messages, to phone and video calls, to interactive multimedia conferences. Over the last couple of years, major players in the voice over IP industry have adopted SIP as their signaling protocol of choice.

A SIP address is a lot like an email address in that it also serves as a locater of the user. SIP addresses even look very similar to email addresses. Like email addresses, they are comprised of two parts: a username, and a domain. For example, if your name was Mike, you might have the following identical SIP and email addresses:
The easiest way to get a SIP address is by creating an account with an online service. Like creating an email account with Google or Yahoo, you will be provided with an address (i.e. yourname@gmail.com or yourname@yahoo.com). However, your SIP service provider may allow you to create SIP addresses within your own domain as well (i.e. mike@yourcompany.com).
For people using old telephones to reach you on your SIP address, you need to have a regular telephone number which forwards to your SIP address. If you want to call people who are using regular telephones, your SIP service needs the ability to call out to regular telephone numbers. Usually, your SIP service provider can provide you with one or both of these services.
Your SIP address allows you to participate in SIP-based communication over the Internet. As already stated, SIP can be used to initiate a variety of communication formats, ranging from a phone call to collaborative conferences, over existing Internet connections without the need of traditional telephone services.

Is there a separate program for students currently enrolled in medical or dental school?All college (including community college) and graduate/professional school students interested in coming to the NIH for the summer should apply to SIP.
Several NIH Institutes and Centers run their own summer programs and there are programs exclusively recruiting students enrolled in professional school. You can find a list of these programs here. All of them require that you complete the general SIP application, but they may have other requirements or eligibility criteria as well. Please contact the programs directly if you have questions.
I'm looking for an administrative (or engineering or IT) position at the NIH. Should I apply to SIP?SIP provides training in biomedical research. If you are interested in coming to the NIH in some other capacity, please take a look at the NIH Pathways for Students and Recent Graduates Program operated by Human Resources. Generally, they reach capacity within a day or two of the opening date, so you should apply as soon as the positions are announced. Make certain your application materials, including transcripts are pre-loaded into your USAJobs profile prior to the opening date.
I am interested in one of the SIP subprograms (CCSEP, C-SOAR AMGEN Scholars at NIH, G-SOAR, GDSSP). How will this affect the application process? The summer subprograms have their own eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and deadlines for submission of reference letters. Please read the subprogram webpage carefully and follow the directions for the program that interests you. The subprogram deadlines are all substantially earlier than the general SIP deadlines. I will be graduating from college in the spring/I graduated from high school some time ago. Am I eligible to participate in SIP? Individuals are eligible to participate in the NIH Summer Internship Program if they are enrolled either the semester before or the semester after the summer. Since acceptances may not be received by the deadline for SIP application, we consider the application to college, graduate school, or professional school the same as being enrolled for the fall. NOTE: NIEHS may differ on this point. If you are interested in NIEHS, contact them directly.
To whom should my references mail their letters? References do not mail letters. When you have completed all your sections of the application, our system will automatically send an email request for a letter to each of your references.
